Every consequential claim on this site is traceable to an official source that was fetched during research and dated. This page sets out the hierarchy those sources are ranked by, what happened when a source could not be retrieved, and the specific cases where official pages are stale or contradict each other. We record all of that rather than smoothing it over, because the smoothing is where the errors get in.

The source register

Research is recorded before pages are written. For each source we record the issuing authority, what the page is, its URL, the topic, the date we checked it, the outcome of retrieving it, and any “last updated” date the official page itself displays.

The register is published as part of this site: data/sources.json and data/jurisdictions.json are the files the pages are built from. A reader who wants to check our routing table against the regulators themselves can read it directly rather than taking our word for it.

Search engines are used to locate official destinations, never to answer questions. A search summary is not a source, and treating one as a source produced demonstrable errors during this research: on minimum gambling ages in Great Britain, summaries returned a figure that had been superseded, and the correct product-specific position emerged only from the regulator’s own pages.

What each retrieval status means

The status recorded against a source describes retrieving the page, not the quality of the source. A government register that refuses automated access is a first-rate source we could not read automatically. It is never downgraded, and never replaced with something lower-quality that happens to return a result.

When an official source cannot be retrieved

Regulators are entitled to protect their systems, and several do. Automated research runs into bot mitigation, rate limits, challenge pages, region restrictions and interfaces that exist only inside a JavaScript application.

The fallback runs in order: another official page from the same authority documenting how the register works; official government or legislative documentation of the same rule; a search used only to locate an official destination which is then fetched; and if the position still cannot be established, the limitation is stated on the page and the reader is given the manual procedure.

Official pages that are out of date

An official source being authoritative does not make it current, and this came up often enough to be worth a section rather than a footnote.

  • A regulator’s consumer page on self-exclusion carrying a last-updated date from 2021 while stating a scope that a licence condition published later does not match.
  • A list of banks offering gambling blocks carrying an early-2025 date, in a product area that changes considerably faster than regulator guidance.
  • A regulator’s anti-money-laundering guidance carrying a 2025 date that still contains a passage referring to regulations superseded years earlier.
  • A page describing a lottery minimum age in language implying a change had “recently” happened, years after the fact.
  • A regulator’s guidance page describing a monetary threshold in the currency it carried before an amendment that had already come into force.

Where an official page displays its own last-updated date, we record it, because the age of the source matters as much as the age of our reading of it. Where a page is visibly stale, the site says so rather than quietly relying on it.

Conflicts we recorded rather than resolved

Where two official sources disagree, picking a winner would be inventing certainty. We record both, with their dates and the instruments they cite, and say what remains unresolved.

How errors get fixed

Research is re-checked by an independent pass that re-fetches every claimed official URL and re-tests the consequential facts, working on the assumption the first pass was careless. That pass found real errors in this research — including a quotation that turned out to be a splice of two different sentences, and a stated rule about ending a national self-exclusion that was materially stricter than what the regulator’s page actually said. Both were corrected before publication.

It will not have found everything. If you find something wrong, the corrections policy sets out how to report it and what evidence moves it fastest — a link to the authority’s own page showing the correct position is acted on directly.

The explanatory note is shown where it records a limitation — a source we could not retrieve cleanly, or one displaying its own out-of-date stamp. Notes on sources that were read without incident are descriptive rather than cautionary and are omitted here to keep the page readable; all of them are in data/sources.json, which is published for exactly this reason.
