Responsible gambling
Responsible gambling
The controls that exist, ordered by how much they actually do — and an honest account of the gap every one of them leaves.
In short
If you want to stop, the strongest single step is scheme-level self-exclusion: one registration that every operator bound to it must honour. Below that sit deposit limits, time-outs and reality checks, which a licensed operator is generally required to offer. None of these reaches sites outside the scheme, so blocking software and bank gambling blocks are worth adding. Support services are independent of any gambling company and several are free and confidential.
Start with the strongest thing available
The tools are not interchangeable, and a common mistake is starting with the weakest because it is the least final. If your intention is to stop, go to the top of this list.
- Scheme-level self-exclusion — one registration covering every operator bound to the scheme. Available in Great Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark and Ontario among the jurisdictions covered here.
- Blocking software and bank gambling blocks — these work regardless of where a site is licensed, which is precisely the gap every scheme leaves.
- Operator-level self-exclusion — the route where no scheme exists, and immediate with the operator you contact.
- Deposit and loss limits — a boundary rather than a stop, and generally slow to loosen.
- Time-outs and reality checks — short breaks and in-session reminders. The lightest of the tools.
The tools, and what each one actually does
Self-exclusion
Scheme-level and operator-level exclusion, the minimum periods that differ sharply between countries, and exactly what each scheme does not cover.
Self-exclusionDeposit and loss limits
How limits work, which jurisdictions require them, and why an increase generally cannot take effect immediately while a decrease can.
LimitsTime-outs and reality checks
Short cooling-off periods and in-session reminders — and why a time-out is not self-exclusion.
Breaks and remindersHelp and support
Independent services, who runs them, whether they are free, and how to reach them.
Support services
What differs by jurisdiction
Almost everything specific about these tools is jurisdiction-specific, and figures quoted without a country attached are usually wrong somewhere. A few documented examples:
| Tool | Documented variation |
|---|---|
| Delay on increasing a deposit limit | At least 24 hours in Great Britain and Ontario; at least one week in the Netherlands. A decrease takes effect immediately in Great Britain and the Netherlands. |
| Minimum self-exclusion period | Six months for GAMSTOP and Cruks; ten days for Spelpaus; from 24 hours for ROFUS. |
| Ending an exclusion early | Not possible before the chosen date with Spelpaus; possible with Cruks once the first six months have passed; GAMSTOP requires you to contact it plus a cooling-off period. |
| Cross-provider limits | Germany operates a cross-provider monthly deposit ceiling enforced through a central limit file — a structurally different approach from per-operator limits. |
| Stake limits | Great Britain is the only jurisdiction here with a confirmed online slots stake limit, set at a lower figure for under-25s. |
| Reality check interval | Widely required as a facility; rarely fixed to a number. Great Britain requires the default to be the minimum of the range the operator offers. |
Each figure belongs to the jurisdiction named against it and should not be generalised. The jurisdiction pages carry the position for each market.
Controls that sit outside gambling regulation
Every scheme on this site binds only the operators its regulator licenses. Two further layers do not have that limitation, and regulators themselves point to both.
Support is separate from any gambling company
An important structural point: the support services listed on this site are operated by health bodies, charities and peer networks, not by gambling operators. That matters, because a gambling company’s own “responsible gambling” page is a compliance obligation rather than a support service.
Gambling help and support records who operates each service, what it actually offers, whether it is free, and how to reach it. Where we could not verify a service’s current status, that is stated rather than the entry being quietly dropped.
What these tools do not do
Overstating them would be its own kind of harm.
- No scheme blocks gambling worldwide. Every one binds the operators its regulator licenses, and the sites most likely to accept an excluded person are exactly the ones outside it.
- A limit does not make gambling safe. It bounds one dimension of one account.
- A reality check is a reminder, not an intervention. It tells you how long you have been playing and nothing more.
- Tools are not treatment. They control access. If gambling has become compulsive, that is a health matter, and the services listed separately exist for it.
- Registration is not instant. Operators check registers on their own cycle, and existing accounts still need closing.
- This site is not a support service. We are an informational resource with no ability to exclude you from anything or intervene with any operator.

Two cautions about the support organisations it names: the Responsible Gaming Foundation's own site carries notices of its absorption into the MGA, so it is not plainly arms-length from the regulator, and the MGA's outbound SEDQA link returned HTTP 403 and could not be checked. No last-updated date.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Malta Gaming Authority
Self-Barring — Malta Gaming Authority (Player Hub)
Online-oriented: it describes self-exclusion as blocking access to 'the gaming website which the player has excluded with', and publishes the Self-Barring Request Application Form (MGA-F-006) and the Self-Barring Auto-Renew Removal Form (MGA-F-015). The land-based self-barring sentence is on the Safer Gambling page, not this one. No last-updated date, and the land-based renewal mechanics are not stated anywhere.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

NHS
Help for problems with gambling — NHS
Stale: the page shows 'Last reviewed: 8 December 2023' with the next review due 8 December 2026, so it predates the statutory-levy transition and must not be relied on for who funds treatment today. It names the regional NHS services but states no age range. Its GamStop wording is three discrete options — 6 months, 1 year or 5 years — not a range; the verification pass flagged the earlier '6 months to 5 years' rendering as a misquotation.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation
My PlayBreak — OLG's self-exclusion tool
OLG is a Crown agency and operator, not the regulator, so cite this as the scheme's own authority rather than as a regulatory source. It is the only verified source for the statement that BetGuard does not cover land-based casinos, and it publishes two enrolment numbers: 1-800-387-0098 for casinos and 1-855-978-7529 for OLG.ca. Its term lists are longer than AGCO's summary of them. No last-updated date; only a 2026 copyright line.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Overheid.nl (Dutch government legal database)
Besluit kansspelen op afstand — consolidated text of 15 July 2022 (article 4.14 on limits)
The Dutch decree itself, and the source of the rule that a Dutch limit increase is delayed while a decrease is immediate. The URL pins one consolidated version: check whether a later consolidation has changed article 4.14 before republishing anything from it.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Responsible Gaming Foundation
Responsible Gaming Foundation Malta
Organisation in transition. The site still publishes the national helpline number and is still the route the MGA names, but it states that certain services will be unavailable because of the change, is not accepting donations, marks funding calls closed pending absorption into the MGA, and shows nothing newer than 2024. Operating hours are published nowhere on the site — do not claim the line is 24/7.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Spelinspektionen
Responsible Gambling and duty of care — Spelinspektionen (English)
States an 18 minimum for gambling and a 20 minimum for entry to Casino Cosmopol. The figure 20 was not found in the Gambling Act text, so its legal basis is unestablished and must not be attributed to that Act.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Spelinspektionen
Spelpaus.se — This is how it works
Durations are 10 days, 1, 3 or 6 months, or until further notice (at least 12 months). A self-exclusion cannot be cancelled or ended early; it may be replaced with a longer one but never shortened, and a fixed-term exclusion ends automatically on its end date.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Spelinspektionen
Spelproblem — hjälp vid spelberoende (Spelinspektionen)
Swedish-language only. It refers readers to Stödlinjen and Spelpaus, and to the peer-support organisations spelberoende.se and spelberoendegruppen.com, which were not fetched and are therefore not linked here.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Welcome to Spelpaus.se — English entry point for Swedish self-exclusion
Registration is confirmed with Swedish e-identification (Mobilt BankID, BankID, Freja eID+ or a foreign eID) and the FAQ states a Swedish personal identity number is needed. An alternative route for people without e-identification is signposted but was not opened.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Guidance: duty of care — Spelinspektionen (PDF)

SGA regulations in English — Spelinspektionen
The English-language regulations index. Note what it could not deliver here: the Swedish Gambling Act and Ordinance translations linked from the regulator's document store both returned HTTP 404, so Sweden's statutory deposit-limit structure and any waiting period before an increase remain unverified and must not be stated.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

The SGA's situation report — online gambling outside the licensed market (PDF)
Downloaded as a 733 KB binary PDF but never parsed — no text was read and no claim on this site rests on its contents. Listed because it is the likeliest official Swedish source on people gambling outside the licensed market despite an exclusion; a human must open it before anything is quoted from it.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Spillemyndigheden
National Helpline for Gambling Problems: StopSpillet
The English description of the authority's own free and confidential helpline, which serves players, relatives and professionals. It lists live chat on Monday to Thursday only, while the helpline's own site also shows a Friday chat window; both were observed independently and the conflict is unresolved, so both should be shown. No last-updated date is shown.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Spillemyndigheden (Danish Gambling Authority)
Gratis behandling af spilafhængighed (ludomani)
Danish-language page. The regulator funds and routes to treatment providers but does not run them. Despite the page title, it does not itself say who pays, and it states no age or eligibility rules — do not fill those gaps.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable

Hjælpelinje til spilafhængige skifter hænder (nyhed)

What is ROFUS? — the register of voluntarily excluded players
Link this path: https://www.rofus.nu/en/ returned HTTP 500 on two independent attempts. Confirmed here: the durations, the coverage boundary (operators licensed by the Danish Gambling Authority, plus Danish land-based casinos and betting), MitID or form 9-01 registration, the automatic 'No thanks to gambling ads' marketing block, and the two-step deletion of a permanent exclusion. Write MitID, not NemID. An unfetched Spillemyndigheden technical PDF appeared in search snippets to give a different minimum for temporary exclusion; that conflict is unresolved and must not be reconciled in print.Checked 18 September 2026 · reachable
